Obituary

Thomas "Tom" Douglas Cox, 72, of Gandeeville, WV passed away February 14, 2023 at home surrounded by his family.

He was born January 15, 1951 in Charleston, WV and was the son of the late Oral Harris Cox and Inez Hawkins Weathersbee.

He was a 1968 graduate of Walton High School. He worked in pipeline and construction as a heavy equipment operator and superintendent with a career spanning 25 years. He and his wife, Dee, were the owners and operators of Cox's Station in Gandeeville. He was a bus driver for Roane County Schools and retired in 2013. He was a founding member of the Gandeeville-Harmony Volunteer Fire Department where he served as Assistant Chief and Treasurer for over 30 years. Tom was the 4th generation owner of the Hawkins' Family Farm, where he resided and farmed.

He was a member of the Harmony Baptist Church, where he was given the title of Deacon Emeritus and served as a trustee. He was baptized in the creek in front of where his grandparents lived; which has served as a baptism location for a number of years to the community. He was a trustee for the Ferrell Cemetery. Tom was a conversationalist. He enjoyed talking to anyone and everyone and always thrived on "holding the floor." He had a love of learning and history; and could read something and have it memorized. Tom enjoyed tinkering and could fix almost anything, hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Delores "Dee" Wilson Cox, of Gandeeville, whom he married April 18, 1969; son, Douglas Cox and his wife, Alison of Spencer, WV; two grandsons, Austin Cox of Ames, lowa and Alex Cox of Spencer, WV; sister, Debra Cox (Larry Wilson) of Richmond, VA; two brothers, Joe Weathersbee (Cheryl Ray) of Chillicothe, OH and James "Jim" Weathersbee of South Carolina; two sisters-in-law, Margaret Fox (Steve) of Tennessee and Beth Taylor (Steve) of North Carolina; several nieces and nephews; and his best buddy, Leo James Hays.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, James "Earl" and Floda "Dutch" Hawkins and Dennis and Ollie Cox; father and mother-in-law, Basil and Faye Wilson; brother-in-law, Richard Wilson; and nephews, Eric Fox and Wilson Richard Taylor.
