Obituary

Raymond N. "Pete" Nichols, 74, of Clover, West Virginia, passed away March 21, 2023 at CAMC Memorial Hospital.

He was born July 6, 1948 in Elizabeth, WV the son of the late Jarrett and Jane (Straight) Nichols. In addition to his parents, Pete was preceded in death by brothers, William "Dexter" (Violet), Andrew "Jerry" (Evelyn), David (Barbara), and Kenny (Carolyn); sister, Alice Matics (Kenneth); father-in-law, Ernie Somervill; and the late Evelyn Starcher, who he considered "mom."

Pete was a 1967 graduate of Spencer High School. He worked at Kellwood Company for 10 years then went to work at Casto & Harris Inc., where he found his new family, and lifelong close friends, for the next 40 years.

He was known for his love of cars, collecting auto memorabilia, faithfully attending car show/swap meets in Charlotte, and his bucket list trip to Barrett Jackson Auto Auction in Scottsdale, Arizona. He loved sports, which led him to coach little league baseball in the Clover community; then he moved on to officiate football for 20 years, as well as referee basketball.

He worked tirelessly for the Clover Community to make it a better place to live and enjoy.  Pete was a volunteer fireman for Spencer-Roane and a founding member of the Clover Volunteer Fire Departments where he served for 40+ years.

Pete is survived by his wife of 53 years, Susan Kay Somervill Nichols of Clover; daughter, Allison (Cameron) Spaur of Clover; the loves of his life, his two grandsons, Jayden Lee and Kyler James; mother-in-law, Rose Marie Somervill of Elizabeth Care Center, whom he enjoyed making chocolate chip cookies for; close friends, that he considered as brothers, Scott, Randy, and Mark Starcher of Clover; several nieces and nephews, cousins; and close neighbor and nephew, Mike (Sherrie).

Pete's request of no visitation or service is being honored. A celebration of life will be held later this summer.

Memorial donations may be made to Clover Cemetery No. 1, 3533 Clay Road, Spencer, WV 25276 in Pete's memory.
