Obituary

Margaret "Meg" Garrett, 55, of Spencer, West Virginia, passed away on Thursday, December 18th, at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.  She was held in the arms of her husband, Doug Garrett, during her courageous battle with esophageal cancer.

Meg was born on January 12, 1970, in Washington, D.C., and was raised in Arlington, Virginia.  She graduated from Bishop O'Connell High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from Virginia Commonwealth University.  In her youth, she was an accomplished ballerina who studied with the Houston Ballet.

Meg is survived by her husband, Doug; her son, Pasha Manly, a junior at Ohio Wesleyan University; and her step-daughter, Paige (Nathan) Tanner of Princeton, West Virginia.  She was a proud step-grandmother to Max and Scarlett Tanner.  She is also survived by her parents, Kathy and Ken Fredgren; her sisters, Mary Kay Stebbins of Mount Laurel, New Jersey, and Elizabeth Hope McDermott of Moorestown, New Jersey; her niece and nephew, Karter and Kade McDermott; as well as Mary Kay and her five children.

She was preceded in death by her stepdaughter, Beth Garrett.

Meg found great joy in the life she built on the farm she shared with Doug, a place she often described as her sanctuary.  The last five years, spent in that peaceful setting, were among the happiest of her life.

Throughout her illness, Meg remained steadfast in her faith and faced every challenge with grace and gratitude.  She lived her values through the establishment of The Ranch Susanna Foundation, created in honor of Doug's daughter Beth, to support underserved communities in West Virginia.

A celebration of her life will be held in the spring at the farm she loved so dearly.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Ranch Susanna Foundation at https://ranchsusanna.org/..
