Obituary

JOSEPH JOHN TAYLOR, 54, of Spencer, West Virginia passed away at his home on Saturday, March 4, 2017. Although a long time resident of Spencer, he was originally from Chicago, Illinois. He was a graduate of Loyola Academy and earned a bachelor's degree in forestry from the University of Minnesota. Joe traveled the country working for the US Geological Survey and fought forest fires in the western United States before he moved to Spencer, and worked for the West Virginia Division of Forestry for 25 years. He was an active volunteer in the Spencer/Roane Volunteer Fire Department and Roane County 911. Joe spent over 25 years as a coach, umpire and board member for Roane County Little League. His love for the game and excitement in the eyes of the young players brought him great joy and satisfaction over the years. Joe was well known for his beloved four-legged companions and his admiration for their love and loyalty. Joe is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Vera Taylor of Spencer; his father, Attorney Joseph Taylor (Joyce); his sister, Nicole; and brothers, Matthew (Susan), Sean (Ambra), Ryan (Bridget), Colin, Michael (Vicky) and Zachary Taylor, all of Chicago. His other surviving family includes his children, Clint Ellis (Mindy) and Lisa Alfred (Greg) of Spencer. Joe also leaves behind five grandchildren; Veronica Nida (Mitchell), Hallie Alfred, Anna Alfred, and Cole and Zoe Ellis. Greatly cherished and loved is his long-time friend, Kevin Gaughan (Gloria) of Chicago. Joe's extended family includes a long list of aunts, uncles, and cousins, as well as dear friends. Preceding him in death were his mother, Marie Dietz Taylor and his sister, Lisa Taylor Moose, both of Chicago. Joe's life will be celebrated on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at the Roane County High School. Friends are welcome to fellowship with the family between the hours of 3:00 and 4:00pm. A memorial service officiated by Geoff Wayne will take place at 4:30pm in the auditorium. His wife requests donations be made to The Kenya Mission Orphanage Fund established at Poca Valley Bank in lieu of flowers.
