James
Mitchell
Jul 22, 1972 — Mar 2, 2025
James "Jimmy" Ronald Mitchell, 52, passed away on March 2, 2025, at his home in Morgantown, WV, surrounded by his loved ones. After a long and hard-fought battle with cancer, Jimmy departed this world with the same strength, humility, and love that defined his life.
Born on July 22, 1972, in Charleston, WV, the son of the late Jimmy Mitchell and Martha Martin Cooper, of Barboursville, WV. He was raised in Roane County and was a proud graduate of Spencer High School Class of 1990. After high school, Jimmy answered his country's call by joining the United States Army and serving honorably with the 101st Airborne Division. During his military service, Specialist Mitchell earned several military awards and decorations, including Army Service Ribbon, Sharpshooter Badge M16 Rifle, Expert Badge Hand Grenade,Overseas Service Ribbon, and National Defense Service Medal.
After his military service, Jimmy found his calling as a heavy equipment operator, a career that not only brought him fulfillment but also led him to the love of his life, Amanda Greaver. Together, they spent 16 wonderful years in Morgantown, WV, building a life full of laughter, love, and shared dreams. Through his two-year battle with cancer, Amanda was always by his side, their strong bond a true reflection of the love and support they shared.
In addition to his wife and mother, Jimmy leaves behind two daughters, MacKenzie Tibbs (Kris), of Indiana, and Lindsay Mitchell, of Martinsburg, WV; Half Siblings Matt Cooper of Barboursville, WV, and Sara Wood of Evans, WV; his devoted aunt, Kim Miller, of Ripley, WV, who stayed by his side during his illness; his uncle, Tommy Mitchell of Spencer, WV; and his five beloved grandchildren, Ryder Zane, Karter Nash, Kannon Grey, Alaina Reese Tibbs, and Hayden Thomas Armando Menendez. We can't forget his best furry friend, Johnny Cash, who was by his side until the end, offering comfort and unconditional love. Jimmy was preceded in death by his father, Jimmy Mitchell, and his grandparents, Junior and Earline Guthrie Mitchell, all of whom he loved and adored.
Known for his humility, generosity, and unwavering devotion to family and friends, Jimmy never hesitated to show how much he cared. An avid hunter and a die-hard WVU fan, he passionately supported WVU football and basketball, always cheering on his beloved Mountaineers. Jimmy's recent reunions with close friends from high school reminded him, and us, of the importance of treasuring every moment and every relationship.
A viewing will be held at Taylor Vandale Funeral Home on Saturday, March 8, 2025 from 12:00noon until 1:30pm. A procession will leave the funeral home at 1:30 for Mt. Zion Cemetery near Spencer for a graveside service at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Taylor Vandale Funeral Home to help with funeral expenses.
Jimmy left us far too soon, but we find comfort in knowing that he is now free of pain and rejoicing in a reunion with loved ones who have gone before him. In honor of Jimmy's life, may we all reach out to old friends, hug our loved ones a little tighter, and never hesitate to say, "I love you."
Rest in peace, Jimmy. We love you and your spirit will forever remain in our hearts.
