Obituary

Harvey G. Boggs Harvey G. Boggs of Spencer, at the age of 87, passed away on the morning of April 3, 2020, after an extended illness. He was born February 4, 1933, in Roane County, the eldest son of the late Howard R. and Grace Wilson Boggs. He is survived by two brothers, Clarence R. "Tink" Boggs and H. David Boggs (wife, Julie Boggs) also of Spencer; one daughter, Brigitte Lowe (husband, John Lowe), one niece, Brenda Fisher (husband, David Fisher) and two nephews, Doug and Mike Boggs; four grandchildren, Jacob, Daniel & Laura Boggs and J. Alex Lowe. He is also survived by several great-nieces and great-nephews and by his former wife of forty-nine years, Helen Myers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Betty Irene Boggs; his son, Col. Laurence H. Boggs and nephew, Bruce Boggs. Harvey was a lifelong farmer, small businessman, veteran, and for several years he served on the Board of Directors of Traders Bank. Early in his career he worked for Broughton Dairy, delivering fresh dairy products to the local communities. Most of his career was focused on small business management, specifically farming and later, he expanded to local motel management. In all of his ventures, building and maintaining cattle farms remained his life's passion. A hard-working farmer, Harvey managed multiple farmlands, raising crops and livestock such as cattle, horses, pigs and poultry. In the late 60's, and early '70s, along with his cattle farm, he managed a chicken farm, overseeing 7,200 egg-laying hens and delivering fresh eggs to businesses in West Virginia. In 1969, the Harvey Boggs family farm was awarded first-place in the Farming For Better Living (FFBL) program for renovations and improvements to their farmhouse and surrounding farmland. Harvey will be deeply missed by his family and friends and fondly remembered for his love of farming. The family is especially grateful to the professionals at the Miletree Center who cared for Harvey during his illness; over the years so many of you grew near and dear to his heart and ours - thank you. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, only a private family graveside service will be held at 2:00pm on Sunday, April 5, 2020 at the Mt. Olive Cemetery with Pastor Larry Greathouse officiating. In lieu of flowers, you are invited to honor Harvey with acts of kindness. A farmer's outlook is 24x7, season-to-season, year-to-year, caring for the livestock and the land, working hard to survive and thrive. In that spirit, help an animal, a family member, a friend, a neighbor or our everyday heroes in the healthcare field with your kindness.
