Obituary for Fanny Reed

Reed, Fanny Cowan
Age 97, of Redmond, Washington, Fanny passed away peacefully on December 1, 2018 after a short illness.
Born February 20, 1921, she was preceded in death by her parents W. Samuel Cowan and Nancy E. Cowan, sisters Eunice, Inez, Myra, and Lucille, brothers Arthur, Clyde and Bill, and her husband of 61 years, William B. Reed, Jr.
She is survived by son William B. Reed III (Brady), daughter-in-law Cheryl Reed, 2 grandsons and 4 great-grandchildren.
Fanny was born in Tamassee, South Carolina where she was educated at the DAR school, after which she graduated from Winthrop College in Rock Hill, South Carolina. She was employed as an executive secretary for the Manhattan Project at Oak Ridge, Tennessee during World War II, where she met her husband, Bill. They were married in Richland, WA after Bill was transferred to the Manhattan Project Hanford facility. At the end of the war, they moved to Spencer, where Fanny was employed as a substitute teacher at Spencer and Walton High Schools. Living a very full and active life, she volunteered as a Red Cross Gray Lady and as a supervisor of Candy-Stripers at Roane General Hospital. As a member of Spencer Methodist Memorial Church, she was an active with the Susannah Wesley Circle and the church choir. She and her husband Bill enjoyed traveling to many US destinations, as well as Mexico, the Caribbean, the United Kingdom, and China. She also enjoyed golf, gardening, bridge, and playing the piano.
Memorial service will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at the Memorial United Methodist Church in Spencer, West Virginia with Rev. Beth Peters officiating. Burial will be in the Eventide Cemetery in Spencer. Family and friends will start gather at 1:00pm at the church.
Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home in Spencer is in charge of the arrangements.
